The Archives and Library Director is responsible for managing and making accessible a repository of approximately 1,200 linear feet of archival collections and research library of 15,000 volumes. Researchers of all types use our materials both remotely and on-site, in a facility that features one of the most impressive riverfront views of any reading room you’ve seen. This is a full-time position (Monday through Friday) reporting to the Senior Curator. The responsibility of the Archives and Library Director is to build, manage, and promote the collections with regard to access, reference, processing, outreach, acquisitions, and preservation, establishing priorities for both ongoing responsibilities and projects. The Director supervises occasional full-time or part-time project archivists. The Director also trains and manages a number of excellent, highly-valued volunteers and interns, upon whom the department and the museum rely.
Work with on-site and remote researchers to provide professional reference service.
Arrange, describe and create electronic access tools (including in OCLC and Archivists’ Toolkit) for archival collections and books.
Support the Curatorial Department in its development and research of museum exhibits.
Work with Museum Registrar on accessioning procedures and rights and reproductions requests.
Plan processing, digitization, access, conservation, cataloging and other projects, and work with the Development Department to write grants seeking project funding.
Manage the departmental and grant budgets and make budget recommendations.
Develop, research, design, and install/create exhibits for the department’s exhibit areas and the museum’s website.
Active participation with the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) and local management of consortium projects.
Develop archives and library collections through donations and purchases, with attention to developing relationships with donors, potential donors, and vendors.
Participate in museum-wide leadership, strategic planning, and policy creation.
Work with other museum departments on institution-wide projects.
Give presentations about library collections for prospective donors and VIPs.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Supervisory skills and the ability to organize work, develop effective work processes, and assess work priorities.
Strong service orientation and an interest in working with museum staff and the general public.
Demonstrated ability to work with researchers of all types, including scholars, teachers, students, enthusiasts, and genealogists.
Ability to assist and instruct museum staff, departmental staff, interns, and volunteers with a patient, respectful, and supportive approach.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated understanding of, and receptiveness to, the uses of emerging technologies in archival and special collections.
Ability to work both independently and with other collections departments.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Required education and experience
The Archives and Library Director should have a Master of Library Science or Master of Arts in History with certificate in Archives Management, as well as three to five years of progressively responsible professional experience in a special collections library or research setting.
Formal training in archival practice and care in handling of unique material.
Very strong hands-on computer skills, including experience with web development, relevant library computer systems software, and software and technologies required for providing digital access to resources
Facility with OCLC mixed materials cataloging and standard professional tools and programs (e.g. LCSH, DACS, Archivists’ Toolkit, etc.).
Demonstrated ability to work collaborativelyto develop programs and exhibits.
Demonstrated ability to maintain, manage and seek out new relationships within your institution and in partnership with other institutions.
Knowledge of American and maritime history and technology preferred.
Evidence of success in fundraising or obtaining grants.
Evidence of active participation within the profession.

Southeastern Archaeological Research, Inc. (SEARCH) is seeking Temporary Project Maritime Archaeologists/Marine Remote Sensing Specialists to complement our Maritime Division for multiple projects throughout the United States.
SEARCH is building a pool of qualified maritime archaeologists/marine remote sensing specialists to pull from for multiple short term projects throughout the United States. Successful candidates should be M.A. level or above (ABT and ABD considered) and be experienced on the water.
If you are looking for project experience and are available for short term projects and can demonstrate:
- Knowledge in the use and analysis of CHIRP sub-bottom profilers, dual frequency side scan sonars, magnetometers, and hydrographic echo sounders;
- Proficiency in the operation of small boats and has the ability to troubleshoot small engines, electronics, pumps, and trailers;
The successful applicant will have a developed capacity for attention to detail, be organized, able to work well on simultaneous projects, and be able to meet deadlines. Experience in cultural resource management, preparing deliverables for the DoD and USACE is preferred. Applicants should have a demonstrated proficiency in HyPack, MS Word, MS Office Pro suite, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Ability to use GIS is desirable. These positions are not suitable for applicants with schedule or travel limitations.

Sixth International Congress of Maritime History Ghent, Belgium (Tuesday, July 3-Friday, July 6, 2012)
Special theme: maritime and global history
The Organizing Committee of the International Maritime Economic History Association invites proposals for papers to be presented at the 6th International Congress of Maritime History to be hosted by Ghent University at Het Pand, an old Dominican monastery located in the heart of the city.
All previous Congresses have adopted a broad concept of maritime history, treating it as an interdisciplinary discipline covering all historical periods and areas. This Congress builds on this to promote and disseminate research in all aspects of humankind’s relationship with the sea from ancient times to the present. The emphasis will be on the international, transnational and global character of maritime history. This Congress will have a special theme: the relation between maritime and global history. The Congress invites proposals for panels and papers that address any issue in maritime history. Interdisciplinary approaches are especially welcome.
Sessions will usually consist of four papers of not more than 20 minutes each. Other formats (debate panels, roundtables) are possible, but all sessions will need to conclude after 120 minutes. Session proposals should include a cover page with title, list of contributors, a commentator and chair, individual paper titles, a session abstract (maximum of 200 words), individual paper abstracts of no more than 200 words, and a short, one-page curriculum vitae for each participant. All sessions should include sufficient time for general discussion.
Contributors may also submit proposals for individual papers of to be presented in a maximum of 20 minutes; if accepted, these will be combined into sessions of four papers. Paper proposals should include an abstract (maximum of 200 words) and a short, one-page curriculum vitae. All proposals will be reviewed and decisions will be made its decisions by May 2011.
All papers presented at the Congress will be considered for publication in the International Journal of Maritime History.
