The National Park Service Research Internship will provide a unique opportunity to work with leading archaeologists, underwater photographers, and scientists in the National Park Service and other agencies in the American state and federal government. Specific work projects will be determined based upon interests of the intern as well as the needs of associated projects. The internship will be based in Denver Colorado but it is expected that the intern will travel to projects within the continental United States and potentially overseas as part of this internship. The internship could involve a specific project in a single park or a larger project in multiple parks.
For more than 30 years the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society (OWUSS) has offered a variety of experience-based internships. Our goal is to foster development of the future leaders of the marine environment. We continue to believe that by investing in special young people, by exposing them to a broad array of activities in the underwater community and giving them opportunities to work with influential people who are leaders in aquatic disciplines, we are investing in the future of our oceans and lakes.
The OWUSS Summer internships are offered for a 1 to 3 month period and are primarily directed at college undergraduates and graduating seniors. Internship recipients will receive a grant to help fund travel to/from site, room and board, and a stipend to cover living expenses.
For 2012, the OWUSS currently plans to award 1 internship in Europe and 4 summer internships in North America.

Michigan Technological University is pleased to announce a strategic faculty hiring initiative (SFHI) for up to seven faculty to build upon existing expertise in water at the University. This team of faculty will define and address compelling issues in the natural, engineering, and socioeconomic aspects of water. We are interested in faculty who can contribute to research and teaching on sustainable water systems of global significance. New faculty will be able to take advantage of a strong university focus on the Great Lakes, coinciding with the opening of Michigan Tech’s $25 million Great Lakes Research Center in August 2012.
We are particularly interested in faculty with water-focused research and educational interests within the following broadly defined areas:
• Freshwater and marine ecology and ecosystems
• Water-related health sciences
• Physical oceanography, limnology, and hydrodynamic modeling
• Environmental ethics, history, and policy
• Environmental sociology, anthropology, economics, and psychology
• Atmospheric sciences and climate studies
• Watershed, forest, wetland, groundwater hydrology
• Water quality modeling, measurement, and improvement

Faculty hired through this initiative are expected to establish a vigorous, nationally competitive research program and to be committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) education. We are seeking candidates at assistant, associate or full professor levels, including senior scholars with well-established research programs. Applicants who can expand, enhance, and/or complement water-related research at the university are especially encouraged to apply. New faculty may be affiliated with any existing department at Michigan Tech; joint appointments will also be considered.

The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate-level research in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology, particularly by women and members of minority groups. Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships carry a 12-month stipend for each student of $30,000 and an annual cost-of-education allowance of up to $12,000 and up to $10,000 support for a four to six week research collaboration at a NOAA facility. Masters students may be supported for up to two years, and doctoral students for up to four years. About four scholarships are awarded each year.
Those eligible to apply are United States citizens currently pursuing or intending to pursue a masters or doctoral level degree in oceanography, maritime archaeology (including the curation, preservation, and display of maritime artifacts) or marine biology, (including all science, engineering, and resource management of ocean and coastal areas). Studies must be conducted on a full-time basis. Additional eligibility requirements that must be met before the release of funds is acceptance to an institution in the U.S. with an accredited program in the areas described above, and certification by that institution that the award recipient will adhere to a detailed plan of study with approved research. Recipients of scholarship awards may be employed at the time of the award if it is a requirement of their degree program or directly related to their research effort. Other forms of employment will not be allowed and scholars will be required to submit a letter certifying that they meet this requirement. Eligibility must be maintained for each succeeding year of support and annual reporting requirements, to be specified at a later date, will apply.
The 2012 application process begins on September 1, 2011. All applications must be received by February 10, 2012, no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recipients are required to travel to Silver Spring, MD, for a NOAA Scholarship Orientation Training Program and to meet with National Marine Sanctuaries Program staff the last week of May. We are currently recruiting for a Maritime Heritage Consultant to join EMUs Consultancy Team with immediate effect. The position is based at EMUs Durley office, Southampton, but other locations may be considered.
The position is initially offered on a temporary project‐specific basis with the possible extension to a full time contract for the right candidate. The candidate will work within a skilled team of consultants, scientists and archaeologists and will be responsible for delivering a wide range of heritage projects, from desk‐based assessments through to environmental impact assessments.
