Michigan Technological University is pleased to announce a strategic faculty hiring initiative (SFHI) for up to seven faculty to build upon existing expertise in water at the University. This team of faculty will define and address compelling issues in the natural, engineering, and socioeconomic aspects of water. We are interested in faculty who can contribute to research and teaching on sustainable water systems of global significance. New faculty will be able to take advantage of a strong university focus on the Great Lakes, coinciding with the opening of Michigan Tech’s $25 million Great Lakes Research Center in August 2012.

We are particularly interested in faculty with water-focused research and educational interests within the following broadly defined areas:
• Freshwater and marine ecology and ecosystems
• Water-related health sciences
• Physical oceanography, limnology, and hydrodynamic modeling
• Environmental ethics, history, and policy
• Environmental sociology, anthropology, economics, and psychology
• Atmospheric sciences and climate studies
• Watershed, forest, wetland, groundwater hydrology
• Water quality modeling, measurement, and improvement
• Engineered water systems, including the water-energy nexus
• Remote sensing and advanced instrumentation for hydrologic applications

Faculty hired through this initiative are expected to establish a vigorous, nationally competitive research program and to be committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate (MS and PhD) education. We are seeking candidates at assistant, associate or full professor levels, including senior scholars with well-established research programs. Applicants who can expand, enhance, and/or complement water-related research at the university are especially encouraged to apply. New faculty may be affiliated with any existing department at Michigan Tech; joint appointments will also be considered.

An Advanced degree (PhD, MD, or DO) is required; postgraduate degree experience is strongly preferred. The application review process will begin on October 1, 2011. Applicants are asked to send their application materials electronically as a single PDF document to provost-water@mtu.edu. The PDF should contain the following items:
• A clear identification of the primary focus area from the above list that most closely describes the applicant’s research expertise (secondary focus areas may also be included);
• A cover letter that describes:
o The applicant’s ability to collaborate with current water-related research and education efforts at Michigan Tech (e.g. identifying potential collaborators among the Michigan Tech faculty and institutes and academic departments at Michigan Tech that most closely match your interests);
o  The applicant’s experience with issues of diversity, or working in a multicultural environment;
o Current/expected academic rank.
• A full curriculum vitae;
• A two-page (limit) discussion of research experience, interests and future goals;
•  A two-page (limit) discussion of teaching interests and philosophy;
• The names and contact information for three references.
