The Museum Educator is responsible for developing and teaching exciting, high-quality educational programs according to the highest standard of the museum’s potential. This part-time, hourly, non-exempt position offers a unique opportunity to practice a wide range of skills by leading innovative, interdisciplinary activities, and connecting people of all ages with the museum’s collection. Educator is instrumental in strengthening visitors’ appreciation of Long Island’s maritime history with other diverse topics in culture, art, and science in meaningful ways. The museum delivers programs for preschoolers to seniors; majority of events are family-friendly and are geared for children 5-12 years old. Weekdays with occasional weekend and evening work required; scheduling and number of hours worked per week can be seasonally flexible. Position begins in June. Those available only for summer season will be considered, although position can extend into fall and winter. Some travelling is required, as some museum programs take place off-site throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, especially in the summer.
– Degree in education (or pursuing degree in education); Certification & Master’s preferred; OR Degree in Life Sciences/History/Museum Studies coupled with strong teaching background
– At least 2 years experience teaching in classroom and informal museum settings
– Demonstrated skill in creating age-appropriate materials for many learning styles, including knowledge of hands-on, inquiry-based learning theories
– Creative, motivated, and enthusiastic with strong can-do attitude; excellent public presentation skills; makes learning a fun adventure!
– Knowledge of Long Island’s maritime history/whale biology/ocean sciences, or willingness to learn
– Reliable and punctual; able to multi-task and manage time effectively in a small but busy workplace
– Willingness to travel to offsite locations with personal car, as needed (we will reimburse mileage)
– Moderate lifting of portable teaching bins may be required

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced today it is seeking qualified individuals to serve on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Scientific Committee beginning October 15, 2014, for a three-year period. The Committee is chartered under the Federal Advisory Committee Act to advise the Secretary of the Interior, through the BOEM Director, on the scientific quality and value of BOEM’s Environmental Studies Program (ESP) for the purpose of informing decisions on managing offshore resources. BOEM is a leading contributor to the growing body of scientific knowledge on the nation’s marine and coastal environment and its research and science activities span a diverse spectrum of environmental and socioeconomic disciplines important to decision making on the OCS energy and minerals management programs. The ESP develops, conducts and oversees world-class scientific research covering physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, biology, protected species, social sciences and economics, submerged cultural resources and environmental fates and effects.
Committee members are appointed by the Secretary based on technical skills and geographic representation and must meet the following criteria: scientific competence, reputation within their field of expertise, and ability to address important elements of BOEM’s research and science activities.
This responsibility requires a broad spectrum of expertise both in terms of scientific specialty and geographic range. Members are selected such that their expertise does not overlap. The Committee is also evenly divided into three sections covering the areas of physical, biological, and social sciences. Recommendations for appointment are based on the specific expertise of the appointee and the existing balance of the Committee.
Scientific Committee membership consists of approximately 15 non-Federal voting members and two Federal ex-officio, non-voting members. Committee members are designated as special government employees and must comply with applicable ethics rules and regulations.

SML Underwater Research Course
The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML), operated by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, is offering an Underwater Research course July 28-August 11, 2014. The course will be held on Appledore Island. The focus of the course is to provide guidance and opportunities for students to conduct original research underwater. Lectures cover hypothesis testing and experimental design, theoretical and practical aspects of sampling, current ecological research in the Gulf of Maine, and advanced aspects of diving physics and physiology. 2014 Maritime Archaeology Field School
St. Mary’s College of California and the University of Rhode Island will be offering a joint Field School in Maritime Archaeology in Bermuda from July 21st-August 7th, 2014.
The field school is a research-based learning experience that exposes students to a variety of activities including underwater excavation and documentation of historic shipwrecks, archaeological survey, and artifact conservation.
Training also leads to AAUS qualification as a Scientific Diver-in-Training.

AAUS Student Scholarships 2014
The AAUS Foundation awards scholarships to graduate students engaged in, or planning to begin, research projects
in which diving is used as an important research tool or studying diving science. The Kevin Gurr Scholarship awards $3000 to a Master program student. The Kathy Johnston Scholarship awards $3000 to a Doctoral student. AAUS may also award additional $1500 scholarships to the second ranked proposals in each category.
The Foundation also grants the Kevin Flanagan Travel Award providing up to $800 for undergraduate/graduate students to attend an AAUS scientific meeting and the Hollis Gear Award that provides up to two recipients with an award valued at $1250, good towards Hollis dive gear and travel monies.

AIMA 2014 Scholarship Announcement
AIMA is pleased to announce the 2014 AIMA Scholarship for maritime archaeological research projects. The investigation or project must be consistent with the objectives of AIMA and the work must have a benefit/application to maritime archaeology in Australasia. The award is open to all persons conducting maritime archaeological research within Australasia.
A total of up to $2000 will be awarded. AIMA may choose to partially fund more than one project from these monies in 2014. A condition of the AIMA Scholarship is that the recipient(s) are required to publish in the AIMA Newsletter, or for larger awards, a peer-reviewed paper either in the AIMA Bulletin, or as an AIMA Special Publication. This award also comes with a free one year AIMA membership.
