Maritime Archaeology Field School
Maritime Archaeology Field School – Phillip Island – Victoria, 1 – 15 February 2015
This Maritime Archaeology Field School provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, recording and excavation. Some lectures and videos will be provided on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists. The Field School will include practical exercises, field work and associated lecture/seminars.
This topic aims to:
– develop the field skills associated with the practice of underwater archaeology;
– improve understanding of the methodological approaches to archaeology under water;
– increase knowledge and understanding of the history and practice of maritime archaeology;
– appreciate the place and role of maritime archaeology in the interpretation of maritime subcultures and culture in the wider context.
Students interested in participating in the diving activity offered as a part of this field school are advised to review our website for all requirements, with particular attention drawn to diving qualification and dive medical requirements.
