This position is located in the Underwater Archeology Branch, Naval History and Heritage Command, located in the Washington Navy Yard, D.C. The function of the Underwater Archeology Branch of the NHHC is to manage and conduct research on the Navy’s 17,000 sunken military craft which often serve as war graves, carry environmental hazards or unexploded ordnance, and represent significant historic properties. The primary purpose of this position is to be the subject matter expert for the Navy in key underwater research and operational functions, including research and deployment of the Geographical Information System (GIS) of sunken military craft including the inventory SMC ship and aircraft wrecks and to serve as the SME for the Sunken Military Craft Act including all legal, regulatory and enforcement provisions of that Act and its regulations.

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled as an Archeologist or a Physical Scientist.
