Underwater Archaeologist

Position Description:

ELOS Environmental, LLC (ELOS) seeks an experienced Underwater Archaeologist. The primary responsibilities of this role are to acquire, analyze, and evaluate underwater archaeological survey data to be included in reports which will be evaluated by the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) to comply with requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.


  • Graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field.

Required Experience

  • Document the design and execution of an underwater archaeological study as evidenced by an M.A. or M.S. thesis, or Ph.D. or D.Sc. dissertation, or a report equivalent in scope and quality.
  • Document a minimum of one year of field and laboratory experience with underwater sites and related artifacts, including two weeks of field experience and training in underwater survey techniques.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the general theory and application of varied remote sensing technology (side scan sonar, magnetometer, and sub-bottom profiler).
  • Document 24 weeks of supervised underwater fieldwork and 20 weeks of supervisory underwater archaeological fieldwork.
  • Experience or training in the recovery and interpretation of both nautical archaeological and archival data and familiarity with the history and technology of navigation and shipbuilding.
  • Knowledgeable in collecting water saturated artifacts during excavations, preservation, and conservation laboratory methods.
  • Completed Section 106 Essentials course offered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), or its equivalent.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and their support equipment.
  • Experience in GIS products (ESRI).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficient in products like SonarWiz, Hypack and WinFrog.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
